Starting your own LAN's (Local Area Network) is
not a hard thing to do.
-
You first need to do a quick look at what
your are wishing to do with it. And the first look I receive
from most of the customers give me is
"What
is a LAN's and does it do?"
-
What works best for your needs; Wired or
Wireless or both
-
Now we figure what networking components we
will need to meet your requirement.
Remember your internet speeds are based on the
slowest point
At
Linksys.com there is a video about "Networking
101"
Once
you start looks into it you can get into the fad of thing going the biggest, badest,
fastest, on the market.
WHY? Why not with what you can live with
until the you need to update when some of the components start
failing or you out grow.
The most common devise I install now is
Wireless Router's. And they come in all kinds of flavors.
-
Routers
-
Router with Modems
-
Access Points
-
Switches
-
Hubs (Wired)
Then you can look at the network speeds;
Remember that the speed of the Network is only as fast as its
slowest point on the Network and 90% of the time its the Gateway
(Modem).
So why do you need that Gigabit Router (1 Gb
= 1,000 Mb) when you are running a 10Mb (0.01 Gb) communication
line to the WAN with RoadRunner (Time Warner) or PipeLine
(Charter Comm.) or 5Mb (0.005 Gb) from Embarq.
The Only reason you'll need a fast network
is in transferring video, Audio, or very large data files
Now you'll need to start
thinking about the
wireless security of your new network
Yes you need to take a sierras look at it or
any yahoo coming by can get on your network and possibly on to
your computers
So as soon as you get your router going or any
component going on the network "Change the password!" Now you
can change setting to meet your network needs, like:
-
Limiting computers on the network.
-
Control over-all surfing habits though
filter.
-
Limiting the times computers has access to
network.
-
And other control factor.
